<\/span><\/span><\/strong>The recent earthquakes that hit our territory hard have once again brought to the fore the problem of reducing seismic risk in our country. Steel structures can play a major role in this challenge.<br \/>With reference to the earthquake in Abruzzo on 6 April 2009, the one in Emilia in May 2012, and the one in central Italy in August\/October 2016, we can clearly see that in masonry buildings, the buildings that suffered the most damage were the oldest ones made with poor materials and poor construction techniques, such as buildings made with irregular stone dry walls. In the case of reinforced concrete constructions, the damage found was mainly attributable to the poor quality of the concrete mixes, the inadequate design of the construction details, and the presence of strong construction irregularities in plan and elevation.<br \/>Although rather limited in number, the steel structures present in the area, mainly intended for buildings with manufacturing and commercial functions, have suffered very little damage, demonstrating that they offer far superior performance compared to other types of construction. The good behaviour of steel structures during seismic events is now proven by the experience and diffusion that these constructions have had especially in those countries, such as Japan and California, where the seismic risk is extremely high.<br \/>Steel meets the most stringent construction requirements for construction in seismic zones.<br \/>Steel structures guarantee the possibility of absorbing seismic energy, utilising the high plastic reserves typical of the material, through the use of construction details that are far less onerous than those that would be necessary in a reinforced concrete structure.<br \/>Moreover, steel constructions are characterised by significantly lower structural weights compared to construction solutions with more traditional materials, thus reducing the magnitude of the inertial forces generated by the earthquake on the structure while ensuring a more effective capacity to dissipate seismic action.<\/p><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5 class=\"box-title\"><strong>SOLIDITY AND DURABILITY<\/strong><\/h5><div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzoreschini.com\/images\/prodotti\/ICO_solidita.png\" alt=\"Solidity\" \/><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Compared to other types of prefabricated solutions, steel houses are more solid, durable and healthy. Thanks to the galvanising process it undergoes, steel is not subject to corrosion phenomena that can jeopardise its structural stability.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><span id=\"active-toggl2\"><span class=\"toggle-txt2\"><br \/><strong>Durability of steel<\/strong><\/span><\/span><\/div><div class=\"toggle-txt2\">What most distinguishes steel dry houses from their wood and concrete competitors are the characteristics of the material used. Steel, in fact, compared to wood or concrete, is a more durable material, not subject to corrosion and with great versatility, characteristics that are inevitably also transmitted to the final products.<br \/>The use of steel allows for a high degree of precision and correspondence to the calculation model of the structure, thanks to its isotropic characteristics (it always absorbs stress in the same way regardless of the point of direction of force application) and homogeneity.<br \/>Steel structures have identical chemical and physical qualities in every part and react uniformly to stress.<br \/>Dry-built steel houses have a higher passive fire resistance than prefabricated timber houses. Furthermore, as steel is not a conductor of moisture, buildings are not affected, as is often the case with concrete and timber houses, by the \u201csponge\u201d effect, allowing for healthy, mould-free environments.<\/div><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><h5>\u00a0<\/h5><h5 class=\"box-title\"><strong>SUSTAINABILITY<\/strong><\/h5><div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzoreschini.com\/images\/prodotti\/ICO_sostenibilita.png\" alt=\"Sustainability\" \/><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>The materials used are predominantly natural and recyclable, i.e. with a low environmental impact. Once recovered, it is still 100% recyclable. The recycling rate is the percentage of materials that are discarded, recovered and reused.<br \/>This rate is very high for steel, but varies from product to product. In construction, for example, it reaches particularly high levels: 98% for beams, 65-70% for reinforcing bars. For every tonne of steel produced, the steel industry produces a benefit for future generations who will not have to produce any. Recycled steel represents 40% of the world's ferrous resource. It is also an environmentally \u201cinert\u201d material: when it comes into contact with air or water, it does not emit or release substances harmful to the environment or humans. Steel construction techniques also reduce the environmental impact and inconvenience to neighbours. Water use, waste production, dust emissions, traffic and noise are considerably lower than on a traditional building site. Site management thus becomes easier.<\/div><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><h5 class=\"box-title\"><strong>ENERGY SAVING<\/strong><\/h5><div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzoreschini.com\/images\/prodotti\/ICO_risparmio.png\" alt=\"Energy saving\" \/><\/div><div>The strong insulation and ventilation of the envelope prevents winter heat loss and overheating in summer. Furthermore, the adoption of modern energy generation systems powered by renewable sources, together with the integration of home automation systems, allows for optimal management and control of energy savings.<\/div><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><strong><span id=\"active-toggl4\"><span class=\"toggle-txt4\">Ventilation<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div><div class=\"toggle-txt4\">Along with insulation, another parameter that holds the greatest importance is ventilation, which therefore affects the movement of air inside the building. Typically, buildings do not have a forced ventilation system, but air exchange occurs solely through the pertuosities of the envelope or the opening of windows and doors. For a long time, the value of this air exchange was estimated at 0.5 volume\/hour, which means that every two hours the entire air in the room is changed. In reality, this value was reliable until a few years ago, when there were no stringent energy saving regulations. Today, with improved insulation, this value is somewhat high to the point that many planners use 0.3 volume\/hour as a reference value, which means that the room requires three hours to have a complete air change. This improvement in the energy performance of the envelope has therefore led to a deterioration in the quality of the air in the room, with the air remaining in the room for longer. And so so-called forced ventilation was born. The term forced, as opposed to the term natural, which is used for traditional ventilation, indicates that there is a special system that \u2019forces\u201c air to enter and leave the room according to specific design rules. This system greatly raises the energy quality of the building as it is possible to recover the heat of the warm but exhausted air in the room by pre-heating the fresh air through special exchangers.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div><strong>Windows and thermal bridges<\/strong><br \/>Two other very interesting parameters that influence building performance for 15% are window components and thermal bridges.<br \/>First of all, confirming what has already been said, the transmittance of windows is much higher than that of walls. The overall influence of insulating opaque structures is still greater than that of transparent structures due to the clear difference in surface area between the two. Reducing the transmittance of window components is still very important, however, and this reduction can be achieved through the choice of a good window and door frame and the use of energy-efficient glass, typically double or triple selective low remissivity glass with a warm edge. Thermal bridges, on the other hand, are interruptions in the insulation, e.g. at edges, corners, balconies, beams, etc. Interruptions in the insulation are detrimental to the energy efficiency of the building as they partially nullify the work done by the insulation, allowing heat to pass to the outside. And the importance of this parameter is of great concern to insulation designers, who are increasingly trying to reduce thermal bridging through more refined insulation installations and possibly reducing the number of interruption points.<\/div><\/div><\/div><div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><h5 class=\"box-title\"><strong>QUALITY, SPEED, ECONOMY<\/strong><\/h5><div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft\" src=\"https:\/\/www.enzoreschini.com\/images\/prodotti\/ICO_rapidita.png\" alt=\"Rapidity\" \/><\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><div>Dry assembly promotes a high standard of quality while keeping costs and lead times down.<\/div><div>The construction of the parts takes place in the factory where the machining of steel and other components is carried out by means of numerically controlled machines; the structure arrives at the construction site already equipped with all technical and plant installations.<\/div><div>\u00a0<\/div><\/div><div><div><strong><span id=\"active-toggl5\"><span class=\"toggle-txt5\">Simplicity of construction<\/span><\/span><\/strong><\/div><div class=\"toggle-txt5\">An important advantage of choosing a prefabricated steel house is the reduced construction time. The profile shaping processes are fully automated, the steel elements are shaped by numerically controlled machines that input design data directly digitally, thus virtually eliminating the error variables typical of human labour. All structural elements, profiles and panelling are manufactured and pre-assembled in-house, ready for installation, drastically reducing all site operations and avoiding downtime, which increases final costs.<br \/>In addition to an advantage in terms of construction time, this also entails a more accurate and precise control in the assembly phase of the structural elements, reducing the error component present on a traditional construction site, while labour has a lower incidence compared to traditional construction. As dry construction, long drying times are also eliminated, allowing for short construction times.
